clipped from pajamasmedia.com I think that in the future, if there is one, political historians will look back upon the 20th century as the time when the role of government took on a new and hideous form. But now, government is seen as an end in itself. Its an industry much like the heroin and cocaine cartels–its ultimate consumers are the losers. But unlike the drug cartels, its consumers have no choice about whether they want what the seller is buying. They have to pay and take it anyway. Non-consumption is not an option. It isn’t allowed. Laws and regulations breed like maggots on road kill. There is no way anyone could ever hope to keep abreast of all the “rules” that are constantly being generated, but the guiding principle is: “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” When you learn the rules they change the game. Rent seeking behavior has jumped to a new and higher quantum level, not just quantitatively different but qualitatively different as well.
