Careful though, you might actually learn something! --Bob Gronlund) Early in the 1970's, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) -- which includes Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela -- imposed an oil embargo upon the United States. This precipitated a sharp decrease in U.S. oil supply. Not to be outdone in terms of sheer hubris and stupidity, the American government got started at about that same time on its steady barrage of environmental regulations, all of which conspired to further reduce the domestic supply of oil and gas.
