WASHINGTON, D.C. (PP) – Speaking from the steps of the Rose Garden, President Barack Obama this morning proposed a new federal program addressing the nation’s housing crisis and introduced his new Housing Czar, California’s current Attorney General and former Governor, Jerry Brown.
A reporter from the crowd on the lawn asked Mr. Brown if that meant a curtailing of private property rights. President Obama took back the podium before Mr. Brown could answer.
“Let me begin by saying this: I know that there are millions of Americans who are content with their housing – they like their home and they value their relationships with their neighbors. And that means that no matter how we reform housing, we will keep this promise: If you like your house, you will be able to keep your house. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what. My view is that housing reform should be guided by a simple principle: fix what’s broken and build on what works.
