Eye-witness accounts from Tehran tell a bizzare tale of special forces disobeying their superiors. According to these reports, in several parts of Tehran, even though the commanding officers were telling their soldiers to fire upon crowds, they did not. Commanders were heard shouting, “You will be court-marshaled!”, but the soldiers did not budge.

Large swaths of central Tehran are completely devoid of security forces and protesters are chanting loudly. It has also now been confirmed that some Basiji bikes were set on fire by protesters. For the first time, across Tehran, protesters actively fought back against security forces. They put a vehicle belonging to the security forces on fire as well. Other videos showed Basijis being beaten by people.

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
